Professional Background
How It All Started
Siobhan's journey into accessible outdoor recreation began during her twenties, volunteering with the Irish Wildlife Trust. She noticed something that changed her career direction completely — older adults faced massive barriers when trying to explore Ireland's natural heritage. That observation stuck with her.
So she pursued formal training. Her degree in Environmental Science came from University College Dublin in 2010. But she didn't stop there. She completed specialist training in Universal Design through Trinity College Dublin's Inclusive Design Programme, combining two worlds that don't often intersect: conservation and accessibility.
Over the past 14 years, she's worked with local authorities, conservation bodies, and community groups across Offaly and beyond. Her focus has been on low-impact boardwalk solutions — protecting fragile bog ecosystems while maximising accessibility. It's harder than it sounds. Bogs are delicate. People need safe paths. These things aren't always compatible. But Siobhan's work proves they can be.
Her detailed knowledge of Clara Bog's hydrology, wildlife, and visitor patterns has made her the go-to expert for trail assessments and accessibility audits. At halvorne Ltd, she combines years of fieldwork experience with evidence-based writing to help older adults discover Ireland's wetlands safely and confidently.
What drives her most? Seeing people in their sixties, seventies, and beyond experience the profound tranquillity and natural beauty of bogs — landscapes many thought were inaccessible to them.
Core Competencies
Areas of Specialisation
Deep expertise across accessible nature conservation and trail design.
Trail Design & Assessment
Creating and auditing boardwalks and paths that work for people with varying mobility levels, with detailed understanding of surface materials, gradients, and safety features.
Universal Design Principles
Trained in inclusive design through Trinity College Dublin. Applies accessibility standards that benefit everyone — not just older adults or those with mobility challenges.
Bog & Wetland Ecology
In-depth knowledge of peat hydrology, rare plant species, and sensitive habitats. Understands how to balance visitor access with conservation priorities in fragile ecosystems.
Wildlife Interpretation
Specialises in helping visitors understand bog ecosystems — from carnivorous sundews to hen harriers. Makes nature tangible and memorable for all ages and abilities.
Community Engagement
Works directly with local communities, conservation groups, and older adult organisations to shape trail projects that genuinely meet people's needs and preferences.
Evidence-Based Writing
Published extensively on accessible nature tourism in the Irish Midlands. Translates research and field experience into practical guides older adults actually use.
Philosophy
Her Approach to Accessible Nature
Siobhan doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every bog is different. Every person's abilities are different. So her approach starts with listening — to the landscape and to the people who want to experience it.
When assessing a trail, she doesn't just measure gradients. She walks it at different times of day. She watches how light hits the boardwalk. She considers what happens during rain. She thinks about rest points — not as afterthoughts, but as essential design elements.
With older adults specifically, she's learned that accessibility isn't about making things easier. It's about removing unnecessary barriers. A well-designed boardwalk doesn't make the bog experience easier — it makes it possible. And that's the whole point.
"Bogs aren't museums. They're living landscapes. When we design trails, we're not creating a curated experience — we're opening doors to something wild and genuine. The boardwalk is just the key."
— Siobhan O'Rourke
Her writing reflects this philosophy too. She doesn't write down to older readers. She assumes they want real information — details about what they'll see, practical tips about what to bring, honest assessment of difficulty levels. No sugar-coating. Just clarity.
This combination — deep ecological knowledge, design expertise, and genuine respect for older adults as capable, curious people — is what makes her work distinctive. She's not designing for older adults. She's designing with them.
Research-Led
Every recommendation is grounded in field experience and peer-reviewed research on accessibility and ecology.
Community-Centred
Older adults and local groups shape the process. Their feedback isn't an afterthought — it's fundamental.
Ecologically Sensitive
Conservation always comes first. Access is designed around what the landscape can sustain, not the other way around.
Practically Honest
She tells people what they're getting into. No false promises. Just realistic guidance for a genuine experience.
