Common Questions
Everything you need to know about Clara Bog trails and our guided nature experiences for older adults
Yes, the boardwalk is specifically designed for accessibility. It's a flat, wooden surface with sturdy railings throughout, and we offer guided walks at a leisurely pace with rest stops as needed. Most of our guests aged 65+ complete the full route comfortably.
Our main boardwalk route takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, including a 15-minute rest stop midway. The shorter nature loop option is around 45 minutes. You can always turn back earlier if you'd like—there's no pressure to complete the full distance.
Late spring through early autumn is brilliant for bird watching and dragonflies. Winter's quieter but you might spot overwintering species. We run guided walks year-round, so it really depends what you're interested in seeing—our naturalists will tell you what to expect on the day.
Not at all. Our walks are designed for older adults of all abilities—you don't need hiking experience. We move slowly, chat as we go, and focus on enjoying the bog environment rather than pushing distance. Many guests tell us it's more of a gentle stroll than a workout.
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip (the boardwalk can be damp), and dress in layers since weather changes quickly in Offaly. Bring water, a light snack, and sunscreen. We provide binoculars and field guides, so you don't need your own. Check our detailed packing guide for more tips.
We keep groups small—usually 6 to 10 people maximum. This means you get proper attention from our guide, you can hear the birds without too much chatter, and everyone gets a more personal experience.
